The Wisconsin Department of Revenue has announced the availability of grants through the Wisconsin DNR for Wisconsin residents to treat contamination in their private wells.

Grant Program Information

To qualify for the grant program, the applicant must meet income eligibility, and the contamination must be documented by a certified test laboratory.

  • The program provides financial assistance to well owners to address contamination in their wells
  • The program will pay for 100% of up to $16,000 in eligible costs. 
  • DNR will accept applications until funding runs out or until December 31, 2023, whichever is first

What type of contamination substances qualify for the grant program?

According to the DNR, qualifying wells must contain one of the following substances, and the amount of the substance is higher than the maximum allowed. Samples must be analyzed by the state laboratory of hygiene or by a certified laboratory.

  • Nitrate Contamination
  • Bacterial Contamination (E. coli)
  • PFAS Contamination
  • Arsenic Contamination
  • Certain Other Contaminants – Examples of chemical contaminants include metals, pesticides, volatile organic chemicals contained in products such as industrial solvents, degreasers, paint, gasoline and fuel oil.

These funds can be used for wells that have tested positive for Nitrate, Arsenic, Fecal Bacteria, PFAs and more. The program will pay for 100% of up to $16,000 in eligible costs.
